Transition Year Information

What Is TY?

TY is a one-year optional school-based programme that is designed to be a bridge between Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle, giving students the space to grow, try new things, and develop confidence for the future. Everything we do in TY is guided by three key aims:

1. Develop as a Whole Person
We encourage students to grow in confidence, independence, and responsibility while developing essential life and social skills.

2. Meaningful and Enjoyable Learning
Learning in TY is active, engaging, and hands-on, inspiring curiosity and making education both relevant and enjoyable.

3. Explore Future Pathways
Students discover their interests, experience the world of work, and plan for life after school with confidence and purpose.

In Transition Year, students get the chance to try out a wide range of subject areas through exciting taster modules. From discovering new passions to developing hidden talents, these tasters give students a real sense of what each subject involves. By the end of TY, students are better equipped to choose the subjects and Leaving Certificate programme that suit their interests, strengths, and future goals.

Our Experiences

Transition Year provides students with unique opportunities to explore, grow, and discover new interests beyond the traditional classroom experience. Highlights of the year include taking part in the GAISCE programme, performing in the TY Show, and enjoying a variety of exciting bonding trips and activities that create lasting memories.

TY students take on the GAISCE challenge, building confidence, leadership, and resilience through volunteering, personal skills, and adventure activities.

TY Show
